Merkhet Solutions was honored to participate in a global discussion about the future of broadcast on "Time to Talk," a program of the Institution on Engineering and Technology (IET). The discussion with global experts was held on October 6, 2026.
Sam Matheny, CEO of Merkhet Solutions; Elena Parsons, Strategic Business Development Manager for Timing Services at National Physical Laboratory (NPL); and Rupert Brun of IET discussed how broadcast, streaming, production, and audio broadcasting platforms are kept in sync while television and audio technology continue to evolve. The group also addressed the overreliance on and fragility of GPS in a hostile geo-political environment and how Broadcast Positioning System (BPS) can serve as a complimentary solution and alternate terrestrial signal.
The Institution on Engineering and Technology is a multidisciplinary engineering institution in the UK whose foundations date back to 1871. IET's worldwide membership exceeds 157,000 members in 148 countries. The organization represents the engineering profession in the public realm and advises governments on engineering and technical policy matters as well as granting professional engineering designations for the UK. In 2019, IET was appointed as the leading organization to design and deliver a new UK Cyber Security Council.
The National Physical Laboratory is the UK's national measurement standards laboratory. Founded in 1900, the NPL is one of the oldest metrology institutes in the world. The laboratory has made significant contributions to the advancement of science and technology, including development of early computers, the atomic clock, and packet switching, one of the fundamental technologies of the internet.
Merkhet Solutions is developing and implementing BPS. Created by the National Association of Broadcasters, Merkhet Solutions was incorporated in 2026 and seeks to expand BPS as a complementary system to GPS using existing terrestrial television infrastructure and the NextGen ATSC 3.0 standard.
